ISSA Sacramento Valley Chapter Meeting

Due to the continuing pandemic, we will meet remotely on Zoom. Everyone who registers for the meeting will be emailed the Zoom meeting info the week of the meeting, so please register.

Speaker: Carl Neidhardt

Topic: DNS over HTTPS: Friend or Foe or Both? Slides are here.

Description: The Domain Name System (DNS) has long been an underpinning of our network traffic functionality, yet it is also infamous for its very trusting, transparent and unencrypted nature. Different ideas have come up over the years on how to improve this, including DNS over HTTPS (DoH). Because DoH is built into some of the popular browsers now and is likely to become more common, it behooves us to understand what it does and doesn’t do. Whether you agree with the approach that DoH takes, it has the potential to affect our network security practices. We will briefly review what DoH does and then expand on how this impacts privacy as well as our ability to detect and manage possible threats.

Speaker Bio: Carl Neidhardt has worked in IT since 1986, for both the public and the private sector, with focuses on networks, security, and cloud computing. He holds a B.S. in Business Information Systems, as well as certifications in AWS, Azure, Check Point, and the CISSP. Carl is the founder of CARLNTECH, LLC, a reselling and consulting firm, and is a frequent presenter on security topics at local forums like the Cyber Security Symposium, DataConnectors, and the Sacramento Chapter of ISSA.
